What a great site!!! I left the PI (my homeland) in 1978 and have never been back. I don't think I will recognize any of the place from the pix here. Planning to visit this year and this site is very helpful and informative. It would surely be a big help for someone like me, whom I think will be lost in my own native land.
If any of the crew members of the USS Coral Sea CV-43, especially the HT Dept., between 1977 and 1979, please contact Jack Brashear ("Mad Jack") at jaxhog@excite.com or my self (his biker babe), at the address above. Sure would like to hear from you.

I just read an answer to an e-mail dated dec02 i this is old, but I could not believe the answer that was given a guy asked if 1,100 dollars was enough to to get him by living in the P.I. and the answer was 1,800 thats total B.S. Any one with a 1,000 can get by rather well. if you give answers maybe you should explain them. Or hows this maybe, refer them to the RAO in the area there interested in.
Dear ds129@msn.com,
While it's true some retirees can and do survive on $1000 (and less) consider you have 2 children to see through school. To amplify on our answer if you want to enjoy western style living and housing with at least partial western cuisine, drive an automobile or jeepney and have decent health and dental care and partake of some recreational activities other than drinking beer in front of the local sari-sari store then $1100 is not enough. These numbers reflect living in the areas of Angeles City and Subic Bay, both more prosperous and more expensive. Below is an aside on this subject from a Filipino perspective.
Sorry to be blunt but am sure you would appreciate some truth in this important matter. Good luck with your decision and congratulations on your upcoming retirement. Hope this helps - Mango's

I'm not a guest nor a customer of Mangos but I am part of Mangos' staff. I've been working here for almost four years. I started working two weeks after my high school graduation, April 16, 1999. Now I'm almost graduating from college. Without working here I don't think I'll be tough enough to face life's realityy. I just want to tell the world how I appreciate the help that Mangos gives me. Words are not enough to thank the people behind - Pa' Tom, Ta'Wilma, Pa' Mike Trimble who I called Mr. Long Legs, the person who gave me his own made book, Jerry Alexander, and most of all the man who voluntarily pays for my college expenses since 1999, Bob Scandiffio. You are such a good motivator of mine. Also I would like to thanks my co-workers- (previous and currently), the customers I met and became my friends esp. Marshall, Bob Chester, Bob Couttie, Mark Neuman, and many others ( I don't think this space is enough to mention them all :-) ). Without you guys I won't be complete. I've gained much learning from you. Thank you for everything!!! Keep it up!!! It's me, D-early U-nusual R-ain F-orever

Hi everybody, Bill the newspaper boss here in Bangkok. Have you got any pix of that Britannia beer fest -- it sounds like a one heck of a party with 300 guys hooting and hollering on the beach there. I wonder if its the biggest gathering of foreigners down there in Subic and Baretto way. Perhaps the Rambler could give you some pix to post on the board here. The Sex Pistols is sure one way to scare the shit out of those geese. All the best to Mangoes, one fine place. Bill

Two-bedroom bungalow being 3,500 pesos a night. As I say its a family visit so could anybody also recommend the new undersea world while I am it. Hopefully get chance for a few San Migs at Mangoes while I am there as well. Regards, Andy

We made a promise that if we did not hear from one another in a specific amout of time we would search for one another, Any information you supply me with would be greatly appreciated. His name is DAVID BARTLETT, he was at Camp Lejeune, NC (2002), he is 33 years of age and I believe he was origionally from PA. If you know of any places I may search other than the MARINE LOCATOR (which I called and they were not very helpfl in my search) I would appreciate it very much! thank you and once again I enjoyed your site!

I have not visited the Subic/Olongapo area since 1986, but I visit the Philippines quite often (once or twice a year), visiting primarily Manila, Angeles and La Union province. I live in the USA and would like to receive your newsletter, if you have one that is emailed out. I intend to make some visits to the Subic/Olongapo area my next trips to the Philippines, to diversify some my traveling around Luzon and, to renew my familarity with the area. Your website looks great and I intend to do some searching/reading there. I saw it mentioned by a discussion board member on the gotophil.com website, which operates out of Angeles, RP.

Ohhh I wanna go home... Ohh I wanna go home...Yes I wanna go home! Have you ever heard this song??? This is one of the country songs play at Mangos. I do miss Mangos, and I wanna go home. Staying here in Palau, in Micronesia is such challenging. It's been a month since I got here. I do miss Philippines. But I had to leave. To grow and to learn more. Working at Mangos for four years made me more stronger. I would never ever forget all the happy, awesome, beautiful, sad, embarrassing, disappointing and frustrating moments I've experienced in this place. I'm very lucky and thankful... I just want to give everybody a piece of advice. "Don't stop dreaming, it is the key to success!" I encourage you to do the best especially to all the women in the world. Woman is so weak yet so powerful. Life is continously flows no matter what. Poverty is not hindrance to success. If you have a dream make the best to achieve what it is. Don't stop. Just do it! Don't let anybody stop you for what you are doing. No matter who he/she is, no matter how hard it is, you'll never know that it's in your hand already. Discipline+Courage+Determination+Success!!! Go! Go! Go! Women rule the world!!! Regards, Rain

I ofcourse, like many, have many exciting and fond memories of "Po-City". I was a much younger lad from Vallejo, California in 1965, when I came to "grow-up" on Magsaysay Avenue. I was stationed aboard the USS RANGER (CVA-61), assigned to OP Division (IOIC). This site is vibrant and colorful, but it appears to reflect memories for those of a later period. I'll keep investigating, but is there any thing here for an old(?) WestPac "Birdfarm" sailor? If not, I still very much appreciate all the labor reflected here. "DM3 LOPEZ, Francisco C." Grettings, I'm back in the U.S. now after another winter and wanted to thank you folks for the continued good service. I spent many an evening sampling your beverages and eating your food. You people are in my prayers. My only complaint is that on a few occasions a couple of the old fellers were treated rather rudely. My best friend in the whole world is Mike Gallant. On two occasions I noticed that he was treated rather rudely. Mike is one of the finest young men I know and he gave so much to this great land of ours. He's been a brother of mine for over four years and I just pray he gets the respect he deserves. That being said, God bless you folks. Everytime I go in there I feel like ol' Dutch is looking down on me with a smile. He was a good man and he lived a good life.
All my best, Love, Robert Harris

Hello again from Oregon. This site does my old heart good. I wanted to pass along that all the tests were negative. I'm as fit as a fiddle and will be moving to Subic for good come November. If anyone wants anything from stateside, just let me know. I'll bring whatever I can. Also, since the V site is down, could someone please along to Jim Billman that I hope he feels better soon. I know he's been feeling a mite puny, but he'll get over it. He's a true winner and a dear friend.

It was recently Armed Forces Appreciation day here in Oregon and I wanted to remind my good friends in Subic to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices our vets have made. Men like my good friend Mike Gallant, Don Cross, Rooster, Gene Gann, Shorty, Carlito, Gringo, and all the rest gave a good portion of their lives to defending our freedoms. So take a minute to tell those young men Thank ye. They deserve it. I know that my 12 years in the Navy wasn't as uch as some of them did, but I did my part to. Thank ye boys. I respect each of you greatly. So when I get back, let's all head to Mango's and crack a few Blue Ice. All my best, Robert A. Harris Oregon

Hello, I am not sure this is going to work because I am behind a firewall. I may e-mail you and ask you to post this. My name is Tom Eatinger. I was stationed in Subic in 1965-1966 and I was in and out of the PI until the base closed in 92. My last stop was on the USS Durham in about Jun or Jul of 92. I am looking for Mercy Aragon. She worked at the club at Cubi Pt NAS and lived in Olongapo in the early 90's. If anyone has any information about her or her brother please e-mail me at tom287@juno.com. I am planning a trip back to Subic/Olongapo in Feb or Mar of 2004. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories of the PI for me. Tom Eatinger

Hi, Been surfing your site and want to tell you it is great. I spent the best two years of my life in the PI and most of it in the Bario. I left in 1979 and have not been back since but I do want to soon Looking at some of the old pictures brings back great memories. I wish that there were some from the seventies. What happened the the Buzzard Bar. That was my favorite hang out in the Bario when I was there. Seeing the picture of the Samori is also great. I spent countless wonderfull hours there. I would be interested in staying at Mango's when I return. I would want to spend a month. Maybe you could answer a question for me. Is there anything happening in San Miguel these days. I was stationed at the Naval Communications Station there. Used to be a small but great place to party
Thanks

As a retired Navy Senior Chief (23 years), this site brought back some memories. I last steamed into Subic in 78 with a bunch of fellas that liked to drink and carouse like no others. We had our share of good times. I even married a little Filipina gal who at the time was 18 years my junior. We now have 7 beautiful children. She used to work in Subic City as a bar girl and I was just taken aback by her stunning beauty. Oh, how I owe Subic for changing my life. Anyhow, I'm rambling. Great page Mr. Mayers. You are a true gentleman.

A buddy of mine told me to check this page out and I'm so glad that I did. My wife and I recognized a number of the old coots in the pictures. He probably won't remember me, but old Art and I shared a few beers about six years ago (too many beers). I'm sorry to hear about the tragic passing of Mr. Myers. I only met him once, but he was wise beyond his years. I'm sure he's looking down from heaven with a cold beer in his hand and a lil' Filipina gal in his other hand. Bless all you fine folk. Wow! This is the place to visit. I'm so pumped up about this web page that I called six of my old Navy friends and told them to get online and go to Mango's. I've spent the loust three hours going through this page and I've laughed, cried, and felt warm inside. I love it. Tom, if you read this, you're doing a hell of a job. Dated 27 June 2003. Of all the sites that I have been to about the local area (Subic), this is the best one I have seen. You have so many areas covered that after two hours I had to stop and go to bed at 0230 in the morning. Keep up the good work and keep me in your system and please keep me up todate as I am planning a trip hopefully this year. My concerns are safety from MIA to Subic. Any ideas on pick up services from MIA???? Let me know. Thanks John

This is my second try at getting my comments into your site. This is the best site I hav found in regards to information on the Subic Bay area. I am planning a trip later this if all goes well. I am retired LIC with two tours of being "Station Dito" from 1982 to 1986and then from 1990 to June 1992 before the bases closed. Its sad to see so many clubs gone, but iti understandable with no Navy to support them. Any way, hope to meet you all and maybe you can be of help once I get my dates set up. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the bar that was one of the first on the left entering Sucic City. It was the Blue Ridge engineers hangout, (at least when we were there) from 81 to 84 that I know of. The picture of Subic "before concret" really hits home. The hotel/bar had a concrete balcony overlooking the bay. I can see it now. And taste the San Miguel, among other things. I hear dress codes and lights on the streets came later. I liked it plain and dark at night. Had one girl that would yell "Darling" clear across the street when I came by. WOW the things you remember! Mike BT/HT USS Blue Ridge 82-84.

This site is getting quite popular, as I have three buddies at work who have frequeneted those parts. We check out the site at least three times a week. There's just to many pics, but I love it! Sorry to hear about Mr. Myers. He sounded like quite a gentleman. I'm not sure if I ever met him, but maybe he came there after I left in 90. I served on the Arkansas, the Truxton, and the California. All good girls and we partied like madmen in the PI area. Anyone ever go to the old Crow's Nest. I married a gal named Rosie out of there. We now have six kids and call Reno home. I've lived a heck of a life and it sounds like you ol' boys are doing the same. My best to my brothers. Richard Timely OSCS (SW) retired

Hi, My father passed your website on to me. He used to be the aircraft maintainence officer at Cubi Point. He was the person who built the "Catapult Ride" at the officers club at at Cubi Point. I attended high school at George Dewey H.S. back in 1968-1970. It was great seeing pictures of Subic Bay as it is now. As I am nearing 50 years of age now I look back on the Phillipine experience as being one of the most memorable times in my life. I loved being there. I had more adventures and excitement living there than most men will have in their entire lives. A movie entitled "Too Late the Hero" staring Cliff Robertson and Michael Caine was filmed on the base. The off duty sailors and marines as well as all the high school students who would skip school were extras in the movie. We had a lot of fun making that movie. Our principal, Mr. Henry Schoefer would come down to the set to see who signed in on that day from school. We spent a lot of time in his office! At the time I was there we had 5 movie theaters we could go to that were all free. We had 3 beaches to swim at that all had a ski boats that would tow you around the harbor, again for free. We had go-cart tracks for $.35 for 5 laps. You could do an all day fishing trip from 6:00A.M. to 6:00P.M. , or a trip down to Corregidor Island for $2.00 per person for 10 people with a Phillipine crew of 3. All this was provided by special services. My friends and I had a rock band that would play at our teen-club on weekend nights. Bands from the bars out in town would come in and play as well. We got to know the band members and they would invite us to sit in on a set at their bars in town. Goodness did we have fun out there! One of our favorite bars was the WAVE CLUB. They had an entire wall with a painting depicting the harbor at Subic. A band called BLUE SCIENCE was their house band. It seemed that photographers were everywhere! I have a lot of pictures from out in the clubs. There had to be 200 or more clubs, most with bands, out in town. When the fleet was in that place was hopping! For my 16th birthday my father set it up so we could use the Catapult Ride at the cubi officers club for 3 hours. I think the entire teen-club was there that night. We took turns getting fired down the track to attempt to "catch the wire" before we landed in a small swimming pool that would get you soaked. We had a total of 100 tries at it but noone was able to get the wire. We did not feel bad though, since seasoned fighter pilots were getting soaked daily trying to do it. If you did manage to catch the wire you had your name placed on a plaque and proudly displayed on the wall. Subic meant so much to me I always wondered what happened after we left. From your pictures, I see it has changed but maybe in some ways for the better. I will keep watching your site. Thanks.

Holy Cow guys. I'll come over and try to steer a few of the lads of the booze and smokes and get them to appreciate their time. The way a few of these chaps are going, I'd say they have a year left tops. It'll be a little odd to have a VFW with no one in it. Tom Jackson Santa Fe, New Mexico

Great site!!! I was stationed in PI from 84-87 and pulled in several times while deployed. I have been back twice and have really missed the PI lately. My family and I plan on visiting again in july '04. I plan on stopping there and say hi to you all.

Good to hear everyone is doing so well. My leg was amputated last month, but I'm feeling a lot better. I won't have the ol' spring in my step anymore, but I can still get around fine. I hope to be back there by November. If anyone see's Billman, tell him the first beer is on him. Teddy

I served twenty two glorious years in the USN. I was onboard the Kitty Hawk, California, and Rushmore during my time and achieved the rank of Senior Chief (all gold on my arms). I was sailor of the quarter seven times. I'm saying this because with all of my achievments and travels, I've never known a place more glorious than Subic Bay. GOD bless it. I'm an old friend of Pat Mathews. He's an old timer from down yonder and I'll be back to drink like a fool with him soon. To all of you retired skippers out there, hang in there. You guys deserve the break before you go to meet the good LORD allmighty. All my best BMCS (SW/AW) Myers Patterson

Mr. Myers, You have every right to be proud of this website and I want to express my condolences on the passing of your father, Mr. Dutch. I met Dutch twice a few years back and found him to be a pleasant young man with a lot of wholesome stories. I bought Dutch a few "waters" and I'm thankful I did. He has a little patio bar in heaven full of good people, good booze, and lots of those nice filipina gals. You should be proud of your father, he was good lad. All my best, Jason Gonzales Subic Sailor 4 Life

Your website has given me an update into what is happening in the Subic area. It is very informative and humorous. I was born in the Philippines, did three tours at Cubi Pt., worked there as a civilian contractor, retired there, and left in 1997 after 18 years. My heart and roots are still in the Philipines. I returned in 1999 for a visit with my Filipina wife.
You have a grat website. Say hello to Chuck DeMorse and his wife Gina for me.
Sincerely, Ed McCarthy

I enjoy your website very much. It is informative and humorous. I'm most interested in what is happening on base as I did three tours at Cubi Pt. in VCR-50, VC-5 and AIMD. I was born in the Philippines (Corregidor, stationed there, worked there as a civilian contractor, retired there, and left in 1997 after a total of 18 years. My hear and roots are still in the Philippines, so I read your website with great interest. I did return in 1999 for a brief visit with my Filipina wife. Keep up the good work.
Say hello for me to Chuck DeMorse and his wife Gina.
Sincerly, Ed McCarthy

Hi Shipmates from my days at Cubi Point in VU-5A/VC-5A from 1965 to 1967.
Those were wonderful times and we had a great crew.
I retired from the Navy in 1974 and went to work for Boeing Aircraft Company. Went to college at night and got my Engineering Degree. I worked and Traveled the World for Boeing Aircraft Company. Currently retired and living in Wichita, Kansas.
Would love to hear from some of my old shipmates.
