Comments: Dear Tom,
You old salt dog. How are things? My son and I did a little tour of the PI last month, but never made it your way. I was just to busy scuba diving, hiking, and getting to know my lad better. But if you'd do me a solid and tell Jim Billman, Gene Gann, MIke Gallant, Robbie Harris, and Don West hello for me, I'd be much obliged. The VFW web site never seems to open or I'd do it my self.
I'll be back in a month. For sure, I'll see you then.

Comments: I really enjoy looking at this site. Thank you. They call me Albert and I'm originally from Olongapo. I've been missing the life in Olongapo were I grew up since I joined the US Navy in 197.. There's no place like home. I try to visit Olongapo every year, sometimes every two. The last time I was there was last Nov 2003. I always spent my vacation in Olongapo, but for the first time, I went to "La Cucaracha" (I'm not sure of the spelling), my first time. I know Barreto has a lot more to offer but I don't know anyone there. (Wish I do) I'm kind of hesitant but really curious in having a gootime and spent at least a weekend there. I'll be visiting Olongapo again before the end of this year and looking forward to meet nice people there. Again, thanks for this wonderfull site to visit.

Comments: Nice site you got going here Tom. I like it a lot. I'll be back for the Beach bash this year and will drop in for a hello. It's been three years for me, but since the wife passed, I've been getting her things in order and getting reaquainted with my boys. 30 years in the Nav didn't help things with them. But things are better and I'm ready to put my 77 year old body back out there if you know what I mean. I sure am sorry to hear about Gene Gann's passing. I didn't know him that well, but he was always a kind soul to the best of recollection. How's old Mike Gallant? I hear the boys were a mite steamed at him for that money thing, but we're all Christians, so forget it and move on. If you happen to see ol' A.W., pass along a hello for me. He's an old steaming buddy of mine from years back. All my best,

Comments: Your site is cool, dude! it brings back those days when i was always wasted in the barrio. i used to hang out at the at the Rambler with this guy from CG 31. i also like that beach bar called Pinky's across the street. my memories of the barrio is something that will never die! i party so hard, rain or shine and met a lot of cool people from the Darter, Swordfish, Barbel, VC5, VRC 50, CBMU 302, etc. and still remember their names! and you bet i've got pictures of the barrio from way back! i used to live in the barrio next to Midnight Rambler. i don't know if it's still around but i remember it as Buenaventura Compound. i remember a bar called Boodles. i had been planning to come and visit but my American life is keeping me busy. but if i do, i'll stop by. just so you know, i was in San Diego few weeks ago and i was strolling near the water front, and there was "the cutting edge of the sword"- the USS Midway CV 41. i mean, the great ship was just sitting there with that lone E2C Hawkeye on the flight deck! then, i'm reminded of all the guys i loved before from that boat! it's all good...despite the broken heart! i'll pass your site to all the barrio bar flies i know here in the states and kawabangga, dude!

Comments: My name is Ian G. Spaulding. I enlisted in Royal Australian Navy In July 1962 as a 15 1/2 year old Junior Recruit; worked my way up through the Non-Commissioned Ranks to Petty Officer and was Commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in 1975 and resigned as a Lieutenant Commander in 1996. First visited Subic/Alongapo in HMAS Sydney in 1965 then again regularly between September 1968 and May 1969 in HMAS Perth which, along with a number of other RAN ships during the Vietnam conflict, was attached to the USN 7th Fleet. Although we R&R'd at different places (Hong Kong, Taiwan[Keelung and Kaohsiung]) we Mostly R&R'd and did all our maintenanct in Subic. I again visited Subic and Alongapo in 1973 in HMAS Brisbane. I have lots of VERY FOND memories of my 'runs' ashore to the EM's Club and then into town itself. I got onto this website through a friend of mine and I must say it is very well done. Love all the photoes. We have a great RAN website (unofficial) set up by one of our CPO's and you can access it through www.gunplot (go to google as I'm not sure what comes after the word 'gunplot' it might be www.gunplot.com.au Lots of yopur country-men have already accessed it and left messages etc etc. Please feel free to email me. However, I was told that Bob Harris passed on recently. If this is the same Bob Harris, we served in the Nav together and had quite a time in Free China and South Korea. If it's the same Bob, he must have been around 58 years of age. Way to early to go. Was it his heart? If anyone knows, let me know. GOD bless all of ya.

Is he the guy who runs around the VFW with the little pudgy gal on his arm. Cute as a button with a little junk in the ol' trunk? Well if that's the same guy (5'9", 125lbs, white hair, 65-70 years old?), I spoke to him maybe two months ago at the V. He's doing well. Now if he passed on, I would like to know and know where to send flowers. He was a hell of a guy.

Comments: Hey guys,
I looked on the VFW deceased list and didn't see Harris on there. I don't know how often those guys update things, but I didn't see Bob Harris' name at all. I would say to call those guys at RAO or VFW and just ask them. I think if we're all talking about the same guy, he would be pushing 70, bald, glasses, and quite a dresser. I would say to call and ask for Jim Billman, he's in the know on this kind of thing. Anyway, I hope Bob's OK. I met him about three years ago when he was wintering over there and I was there for FedEx. He's a hell of a guy. I'm hoping he's OK. If anyone calls Billman, update this thing and let me know where to send a card.
Thanks,

I'm a stateside member, so I'm not 100% positive, but he should be on there if he passed. Another fella to ask is Mike Gallant, he's in the know over there and could help you. I think Bob statyed at the hotel by the VFW and you could probably call them as well. I had heard he was nasty sick, so it's possible. But I sure hope he's still around. He was a nice man. I'll try later, but you might be on to something. An old shipmate of mine does some business in the old Subic shipyard. The business isn't important, but what is is that he knows Harris. I guess he did take ill recently and so it is possible he passed. I served with a Bobby Allen Harris back when and he was a good cat. If he's gone, he'll be missed. I just hope it ain't the SARS. That's a bad way to go.

He looks a lot better than his age to be quite frank. As for this Harris guy, the only guy I can think of by that name is still alive. He's probably around 70 and is fairly popular with the bar girls. Trust me, he's alive. I attended the Beach Bash and saw him scooting around. I retired from the U.S.N. in '87 and was fortunate enough to have worked for the navy as a contractor. Made numerous trips to Subic until the base closed in '92. I still miss the place. Luckily, through your website, I have the opportunity to see what still goes on back there. In a way, I envy you guys for having made the decision to reside there permanently or otherwise. As natural born Filipino, I still dream of someday going back home for good. That is the only time that I will really feel like I'm retired from the U.S.N. Comments: I was stationed at VC-5 from 8/83 to 1/87. I left as an AD-3 and mostly worked on the SH-3G helicopters and the CH-53's when they arrived in 1985. These were the best years of my life.

Comments: HI, This will sound wierd at first...On your web sight you have a picture from Wilma's birthday.. It's titled "Lenny and Annabelle" Can you please let me know if you can contact Annabelle and send her a message for me.. We went to Highschool together. We were once in love. We lost contact wth one another and I have been searching for her ever since!!!!! If she is who I think she is...We went to Sayreville High together, then she moved to Vallejo after that. If this is the wrong Annabelle I appologize. I have searched endlessly to find her. And this picture looks like her alot. If she is my Anna, and does not want to hear from me, I will respect that. But if she is willing to contact me, please email me and let me know. I have been looking for her for years. I still love her so very much. Thank you for helping me. If this is the wrong Annabelle, I'm sorry...But I think this is her. Send this message to her, she'll know who I am if it's the rite Anny. Thank you again. Don

Comments: I will always have three things to thank God for: His Son Jesus, my parents, and my two years as editor of The South China Sea Sentinel ('66-'67) at Navcommsta Phil, San Miguel. I traveled all around and met the most wonderful people in the world. My Operation Schoolhouse "kid" is in Texas now and still writes. But, sadly, and under orders, I passed the radioman test and had to move on to the USS Mount Baker (AE-4), thereby dashing marriage ideas and putting me in harm's way bigtime for not knowing much radio. The ONLY good thing about the ol' Baker was that she got me to the Subic magazine seven times. Almost 60 now, I'm taking a long look at returning at retirement. The magic is still that strong. This much is true to this very day, 37 years later: I have NEVER had a better job than I did when putting out the Sentinel, regardless of the low pay. If I could get food and medicine, I would do it again for NO pay. Lt. Chorak, Ens. Mann, Photogs Fred and Otto: Buzz me in La., 504-568-6820 x241. To Mango's: Well Done, and God bless. Comments: It is so great seeing the pictures of Subic Bay and Cubi Point. Is it possible to have someone take more pictures of Cubi up on top of the mountain? It was great seeing the old Officer's Club but I wish I could see all the buildings around the are to see what they are now. For example the old Cubi movie theatre, PX, housing areas, Cubi Gym, ect. Thanks!

Comments: What's up with all the death stuff on here. I feel sorry for that Harris guy and that Gann guy as much as the next guy, but damn, this should be a fun message board. If those guys kicked off, then I honestly am sorry, but let them rest in peace. I used to be stationed in the PI and the eighties and we didn't go around talking about dead people all the time. Let them lie. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust to Harris and Gann. Now lets have some fun.

Comments: Well, jsut surfing and doing some research for a photo archive of memories of Alongopo. Was stationed onboard the USS AJAX AR-6, Sasebo Japan from 66-68. Spent about 6 months out of the year rusted to the pier at Subic Bay doing repair work.
Well, all I can say about the PI and Alongopo from that period of time is that you had to be there to believe it! I currently a Graphic Artist and Web Designer working on a CD Photo Archive of the AJAX. Is there any source of photo material available of the Bar Scene from the Vietnam Era? Would anyone be interested in being involed in this aspect of the project to provide some background material for inclusion ?
Do you still get the shit's from drinking San Maggoo ? What ever became of those crazy jeepny driver's ? Was worth your life at time's to get a ride back to the Main Gate. Anyone got any stories from that time?

Comments: So there I was floundering around the internet and I found this great site. I was "station dito" through most of the 80's. Most of that time I lived in the big compound directly across National Highway from Rick & Shirley McGowan's Island Girls. I have a lot of fond memories of the "olden days". McGowan's Island Girls, Ralph Clay's BGU 1 & 2, Tony's Midnight Rambler, John T.'s Ten Foot Stop in Subic and a million or so other places in Olongapo, Barretto, Subic City, Angeles City, Manila's Ermita & Makati districts & Zamboanga City whose names I can
